【重要短语讲解】

   1. make a note of/make notes of记下

   make a note(of) 注意;记住

   make notes/take notes 做笔记

   change one’s note 改变态度

   compare notes 对笔记;交换意见

   take note of 注意;留心

   They took notes of his lecture.

   他们记下了他的演讲。

   We’ll make a note of your suggestions.

   我们会记住你的建议。

   Make a note to get some more milk.

   记住再买些牛奶。

   They often take notes while they listen to the teacher in class.

   他们常常边听老师讲课边做笔记。

   make a note of与take note of的区别是:

   make a note of常用来表示“记下来;记住”,也可以说成make notes of;take note of 常用来表示“注意”,相当于take notice of. 如:

   Make a note/notes of how much money you spend on the trip.

   把你旅行中所花的钱作一下记录。

   Take note of what he says and please don’t forget it.

   要注意他所说的话,并不要把它忘记。

   2. as well 也……

   as well as 而且……;既……也……

   as well as(well adj.) 身体一样好

   as well as(well adv.) 做……一样好

   as long as 一样长

   so long as/as long as 只要

   as far as 一样远;远到……

   as/so far as 据……所知

   as many as多达……

   as well用于肯定句中,相当于also。

   He is my teacher, and my friend as well.

   他是我的老师,也是我的朋友。

   We gave her clothes as well as food.

   我们既给她衣服,又给她食物。

   The old man is as well as a young person.

   这位老人的身体和年轻人一样好。

   He speaks English as well as a native Englishman.

   他的英语说得和英国本地人一样好。

   This article is as long as that one.

   这篇文章和那篇一样长。

   You may borrow the book so/as long as you can keep it clean.

   只要你不把书弄脏就借给你。

   We can see as far as the sea from here.

   从这儿,我们可远看大海。

   As/So far as I know, she is from America.

   据我所知,她是一个美国人。

   as many as 中间常接形容词或副词原形,即as+adj. / adv. +as。类似结构有as long/high/fast as“长/高/快达……”。如:

   The great fire burned down as many as twenty buildings.

   多达20多座建筑被这场大火烧毁了。

   As many as 150 readers crowded round the famous writer.

   多达150名读者簇拥在那位著名作家周围。

   The cost of travelling to Europe is as much as 50 000 yuan

   去欧洲旅游的费用高达50 000元人民币。

   She can jump as high as 1.75 metres.

   她跳得高达1.75米。

   The road is as wide as 10 metres.

   这条路宽达10米。

   As far as I know,they live in the same country.

   据我所知,他们住在同一个国家。

   3. attend a class 听课

   attend a meeting 参加会议

   attend on sb. 照顾某人

   attend to sb. 接待某人

   attend to 专心、注意

   attention n. 注意

   Attention, please. 请各位注意。(用于室内广播之类的开场白)

   pay attention to sth. 注意某事

   draw one's attention 引起某人的注意

   attract one's attention 吸引某人的注意

   be worth one's attention 值得某人的注意

   bring one's attention to sth. 叫某人注意某事

   Attend carefully to what she is saying.

   注意听她说的话。

   We must attend on the people who are in poor health.

   我们必须照顾那些身体不太好的人。

   Are you being attended to?

   有人接待你吗?(店员对客人的招呼语)

   Please pay attention to what I said.

   请注意我所说的话。

   What he is doing draws our attention.

   他所做的事情引起了我们的注意。

   We must pay close attention to it.

   对这件事我们必须密切注意。

   His song attracted our attention.

   他的歌声吸引了我们的注意。

   His suggests is worth our attention.

   他的建议值得我们注意。

   He paid no attention to me.

   他没有留意我。

   4. be curious about sth. 对……好奇

   be anxious about (for) 为……担忧

   be anxious to do sth. 极想做某事

   be eager for 盼望;想得到

   be eager to do sth. 渴望做某事

   be worried about为……而发愁(着急)

   The little boy studied day and night. He was eager for knowledge.

   这个小男孩夜以继日地学习,因为他渴望知识。

   The parents are worried about their son’s health.

   父母为他们的儿子的健康担心。

   They are curious about what I am doing.

   他们对我所做的事情感到好奇。

   He is eager to be a League member.

   他渴望成为一名共青团员。

   5. as a result 结果,因为,由于

   as a result of 由于……的结果

   without result 徒劳,毫无结果

   result in 结果为;终于;终归;导致;引起

   result from 造成……的结果

   with the result that conj. 为此,因此

   He studied very hard. As a result,he caught his classmates.

   他学习刻苦,因此他赶上了他的同班同学。

   He did the experiment for 200 times without result.

   这个实验他做了两百次,毫无结果。

   As the result of fire, a lot of people lost their lives.

   由于大火死了许多人。

   His attempt resulted in success.

   他的尝试终于成功了。

   His careless speech resulted in much argument.

   他的发言过于草率,因而引起许多争议。

   I was very busy, with the result that I couldn't take care of him.

   我非常忙碌,因此无法照料他。

【重点句型讲解】

   1. Howard Carter did not go to school but was taught to draw by his father, who was an artist.

   a. Upon entering the tomb,Carter’s lucky pet bird, which had led him to the place, was eaten by a snake.

   b. Then a few months after Carter had opened the tomb,Lord Carnarvon, who was also present when the tomb was opened, fell ill with a fever and died in Egypt.

   c. Others believe that they are the result of the mummy’s curse, which punished those who enter the resting place of the dead.

   “who was an artist; which had led him to the place; who was also present”是非限制性定语从句,在句子中起到补充说明的作用,去掉了不会影响主要意义,通常用逗号与它的先行词分开。引导非限制性定语从句的词有which;who;whose;whom;when;where;as;介词+whom/which;非限制性定语从句不能用that引导。例如:

   The boys, whose football was missing,were very sad.

   那些丢了足球的男孩很伤心。

   Mary Smith, who is in the office, wants to meet you.

   在办公室的Mary Smith想见你。

   It’s a family of eight children, all of whom are studying music.

   这是一个有八个孩子的家庭,他们都在学习音乐。

   I don’t know the village,where our English teacher was born.

   我可不知道那个村子,它是我们英语老师出生的地方。

   As we know,the boy’s pronunciation is the best in our class.

   据我们所知,这个男孩的发音是我们班里最好的。

   2.It was the most important tomb that had ever been found.

   It be+被强调的部分+that/who…

   此句型为强调句型。掌握该句型的关键在于把握强调句型的判断标准,即去掉强调句式结构或经过语序相应调整后,原句仍然成立。这也是强调句型与定语从句及其他句式的重要区别之一。例如:

   It was because he was ill that he did not come to see you.

   因为他病了,所以他没能来看你。

   3. Upon entering the tomb, Carter’s lucky pet bird,which had led him to the place,was eaten by a snake.

   George Gould, a friend of Carnarvon, went to Egypt after hearing of his death.

   句中的“ing-form”短语用作时间状语。

   on/upon doing sth. =as soon as意思是“一做什么事就……”;如句中Upon entering the tomb; As soon as Carter’s lucky pet bird entered the tomb。

   On hearing the news, I changed my plan.

   一听到这个消息,我改变了计划。

   4. When a tomb is opened, fresh air disturbs the viruses. If breathed in, illness or even death can result.

   If breathed in = If the viruses are breathed in,在句子中作条件状语,这种由连词加过去分词的结构也可以省去连词。
